Hard starting with early fall cold snaps

My John Deere 4430 gave me a surprise this week. After sitting outside through some of the early cold snaps we've had this month, it refused to start. I've already checked that the batteries are fine, the lights come on, but all I get is cranking with no fire. Fuel filters were changed not long ago, and there's plenty of diesel in the tank, so that shouldn't be an option
This tractor usually lights up pretty easy, even when it's chilly, so I'm wondering if the sudden temp swings are causing moisture issues or if I should be looking at injectors or glow plugs. Haven't resorted to ether yet, I'm trying to avoid that unless it's really necessary

How you described the problem points to a lack of proper combustion. Even though you've already addressed fuel supply, I think it's worth double-checking that fuel is actually making it to the injectors. A quick check would be to loosen an injector line while cranking to confirm fuel delivery. If you're getting a good spray, the issue could be with the injectors themselves, or with the injection pump's timing or output pressure, which can be sensitive to cold temperatures. I'd also consider the moisture issue, given the temperature swings you mentioned. Water could have condensed in the fuel system, possibly freezing in a line or at the fuel filter, even if you just changed it. Trying a fuel additive that's designed to disperse water or using a block heater to warm up the engine and fuel lines could help resolve the problem before you move on to more involved diagnostics.
