Monitoring engine oil condition during long field operations

I’m pushing my 6M hard through the dust of harvest season.
What field checks do you actually rely on to assess oil health mid-season?
Do you look at color, consistency, filter cuts, or send samples for analysis?

I usually do filter cuts every 100 hours when I'm using the equipment heavily. Just slice it open and look for metal shavings, they reveal a lot more than simply checking the oil color. I actually caught a bearing on the verge of failure this way before it caused a major engine issue last year.

I send in oil samples to Blackstone Labs halfway through the season. It costs about thirty bucks, and they can tell you exactly what's wearing out and whether you should change the oil early. Way better than just guessing and hoping everything's okay.

I look at the oil color and rub it between my fingers to check for any grit. If it’s black and gritty, it’s time to change it, no matter how many hours it's been running. Also, give it a smell, if you detect a burnt oil odor, it’s toast and needs to be changed right away to prevent any engine damage.
