Diagnosing intermittent engine stalling in diesel tractors

Your 5E is usually a champ, but then it just dies suddenly, like someone flipped a switch. And of course it never acts up when you’re trying to figure it out. What’s your strategy for tracking down that stalling issue when it only seems to happen when it feels like it?

Intermittent issues can be a nightmare. First, check the fuel cap vent, if the tank can't breathe, it can create a vacuum and mess with fuel flow. Also, wiggle every electrical connector while it's running; corroded connections can cause those weird shutdowns.

Always carry a code reader and plug it in right when the issue happens. Sometimes, intermittent faults will store codes even if the light doesn’t stay on. It helps narrow down the diagnosis rather than guessing.

My 5E had a similar problem, it turned out to be a cracked fuel line that only sucked in air when it got hot and vibrated just right.
It took ages to track down since it ran fine while stationary.
Check all the fuel lines for tiny cracks, especially near the clamps and bends where they flex.
